Background

"The Pakistan Literacy Fund is a US-based and registered non-profit organization that aims to work towards improving the state of education and literacy in Pakistan."

PLF Philosophy and Vision:

"It is Pakistan Literacy Fund's firm belief that the lives of ordinary people are directly linked to their individual levels of education. There is no doubt that the lack of quality and mass education is a key factor in the poor economic standard of living and domestic activities of a nation, specially the youth. It is necessary to channel the energies of such youth towards that which would improve their hopes for the future and, thereby, that of the country. Education is an empowering force and one that aims to liberate the minds and hearts of a society. It is PLF's objective in recognizing this as a fact and working towards such an endeavor. Whereas there are several organized groups supporting and working for this cause in Pakistan, we have chosen to work with CARE Foundation, whose organizational leadership and experience in this arena, we have found, not only to be noteworthy, but also exemplary. CARE Foundation is an independent indigenous Pakistani organization and, therefore, most able to tackle the task at hand. PLF supports the work and educational activities of CARE Foundation (Pakistan), the while realizing that there are others in the field that also aspire towards similar goals and objectives. We join hands with all who are sincerely working towards improving the future prospects of the disenfranchised ordinary peoples of Pakistan."

The website for the CARE foundation is www.carepakistan.org. CARE Foundation is currently running over 200 schools with over 135,000 children as well as other vocational training facilities. PLF is also working through the Pakistan Literacy Project: www.pakliteracy.blogspot.com and is also available on www.facebook.com.

PAKISTAN FLOOD EMERGENCY APPEAL

The monsoon rainfall has caused the worst floods in living memory of Pakistan, in what are being termed as “Floods of the Century”. Flash floods and river valley floods have devastated large parts of the country.

The scale of this disaster can be gauged from the numbers affected by these floods: 1 in every 10 Pakistanis has been directly affected. There has been widespread devastation of roads, bridges, homes, crops, livestock, and displacement of millions of people including women and children.

It is a mammoth task to provide immediate relief and to help communities rebuild their lives. CARE is committed to alleviating the suffering of the flood affected people. 5 of CARE schools in Lalpir and another in Dera Ismail Khan have been completely destroyed along with countless homes. Many of the students and
teachers are amongst the worst affected by the flood. In response to this widespread devastation CARE has decided to lead the emergency flood relief efforts. However, our focus remains on reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts towards rebuilding homes, schools and basic infrastructure and thereby lives of those affected.

Emergency Relief:

The first phase of our flood relief program has already begun.
CARE has already dispatched Relief teams for immediate provision of vital supplies including food, water, medicine, cooking utensils, and other necessary provisions. CARE will continue to send its teams with relief aid as long as there are people in need.

Longterm Reconstruction and Rehabilitation:

In the second phase CARE remains committed to reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts. In the coming weeks as the flood water recedes, our efforts will be concentrated in, but not limited to, the areas in and around Muzzafarghar as we have more local knowledge, contacts and resources available there.
As CARE's original founding was in response to a flood situation, CARE has since then been active in disaster situations including the Earthquake in 2005 and IDP relief efforts in 2009. We feel confident in undertaking such community building endeavors on a long term basis. Our commitment will include rebuilding homes, provision of education and health facilities and creating/strengthening sources of livelihoods.
However, as already highlighted by UN, this will be a major undertaking given the huge scale of the disaster, and we will need to raise large amounts of funds to be able to do so successfully.

Immediate Urgency - we need to get the word out even more. I know that there are several other good NGOs working on the field - pick one and support it - but CARE Foundation has significant experience and infra-structure to do this properly with minimum waste (if any) - specially organizationally!
